Authorities raid '168' Mall in Divisoria
Customs officials on Thursday conducted a surprise inspection of the 168 Mall in Divisoria, Manila following complaints that the items being sold were smuggled into the country. The Bureau of Customs (BOC) deployed some 500 personnel to inspect each stall ownerââ¬â¢s tax verification certificate and determine if import duties and other taxes have been properly paid. They immediately confiscated what they determined to be smuggled items, such as garments, shoes and toys from stalls. Authorities acted upon the complaint of the Retailers Association of the Philippines. The group had been urging the BOC, Department of Trade and Industry, and the Department of Finance to look into the unfair competition posed by the 168 Mall. Late last year, legitimate retailers in the Divisoria district reported a 50% decline in sales because of the presence of 168 Mall, which attracts customers from all walks of life. They said they posted losses because they pay taxes and import duties, while 168 Malls does not. Earlier, Senator Panfilo Lacson urged the police to investigate 168 Mall following reports that the bargain-huntersââ¬â¢ haven is a front for shabu traffickers. Other trade groups also urged the government to go after illegal Chinese aliens who were reportedly working or doing business at the 168 Mall.-GMANews.TV
