(Update) Atong Ang arrives at Camp Bagong Diwa jail
Amid tight security, Charlie "Atong" Ang was transferred from the Quezon City jail to a detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City where some 135 Abu Sayyaf members have been locked up behind bars. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) on Thursday said Ang will likely undergo standard procedures and will be placed on "solitary confinement" Thursday night so he can adjust to his new environment. Security escorts took Ang to the Special Intensive Care Area (SICA) of the Metro Manila District Jail inside the camp. Abu Sayyaf members and Chinese drug lords are jailed in this secure site, dzBB radio reported. "For now (Thursday night) he has no cellmates. First-time inmates will go to the reception and diagnostic cell. He will be evaluated on which cell he will be assigned," Chief Superintendent Serafin Barretto Jr, BJMP director for Metro Manila, said in an interview on dzRH radio. "There is no special treatment. They will have the same visiting and meal hours," he said. Law enforcers accompanied Ang and his six-vehicle convoy from the QC jail en route to Taguig, while members of the elite Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) awaited Ang's arrival at the prison facility. Superintendent Ignacio Panti, warden of the QC jail, reportedly joined Ang onboard a black vehicle during the transfer, dzBB radio said. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) was quoted by GMA News' Flash Report as saying that Ang had to be moved out of the QC jail since he was at risk there. Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez argued that there was a security threat to Ang. Gonzalez earlier claimed that a certain "Zubia" called up Ang and threatened to kill him. Government authorities have transferred Ang twice already since his arrival Friday last week. He was arraigned at the Sandiganbayan Wednesday morning, but refused to enter a plea on the pluder charge which the government filed against him and his erstwhile gambling buddy, former President Joseph Estrada. The tribunal entered a not guilty plea for him, and denied his petition to stay at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) where he was initially detained. He was then moved to the QC jail and was listed as Inmate Number 192. The prison packs some 3,000 inmates, although this was designed for only 800 people.-GMANews.TV
