The Department of Education (DepEd) will hold a fun run in Manila on June 19, the 150th birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, to gather donations and pledges for public schools. There is no registration fee for the fun run but the participants will be asked to bring donations or sign a pledge to support schools or help upgrade the standard of education. âWe all know how our national hero pushed for the education of the Filipinos and I am sure that a century after his death that remains his aspiration," DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro said n a news release posted on the government portal. The DepEdâs Adopt-a-School Program (ASP), will set up a booth to accept donations and administer the pledge form. The participants can take part in the 1-, 2-, or 3-kilometer walk or run at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta starting 6:00 a.m. on Sunday. This project will be replicated in all the regional and division offices nationwide. Pledges and donations The donations in kind may include:
School supplies (pencils, ball pens, ruled paper, notebooks, crayons, chalk); Classroom furniture (chairs, tables, cabinets); Equipment (fax machine, computers, printers, electric fans); Classrooms or shop equipment (for Industrial Arts, Home Economics, Agri-Fishing). The pledges may include: Volunteering to provide service as a resource person for a particular subject; Tutorial assistance; Peer counseling; Assistance to teachers (preparing visual aids, teachersâ aids); school maintenance and repairs; or Teaching service. Private sector support ASP operations manager Merlie Asprer said several private sector groups have expressed support for the DepEd's fun run. âEmployees of a telecommunications company, for one, have agreed to pool resources and buy educational materials, which they will bring on June 19," said Asprer. âThis is a good physical exertion and at the same time an expression of compassion for our young learners who need our full support," Luistro said. The fun run will be spearheaded by all DepEd Division Offices (DOs) nationwide. Participating DOs will promote the activity as well as coordinate with volunteers, sponsors and media. - VVP, GMA News
