By MARK MERUEÑAS, GMA News
The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday filed a P2.67-billion tax evasion case against a gold trader from Cebu.
The BIR said Junrie Tenorio, a resident of Guadalupe village in Cebu City, sold gold to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) worth P3.95 billion from 2005 to 2009.
"Despite receiving taxable income from his gold transactions with the BSP, however, Tenorio failed to file his annual income tax return (ITR) for taxable years 2005 to 2009," said the BIR.
Apart from his failure to file his tax returns from the gold transactions, Tenorio – who is a "taxpayer earning purely compensation income" – also did not pay his income taxes for the same period. The BIR said his tax deficiency was estimated to be P2.67 billion.
Tenorio was slapped with five counts of willful attempt to evade or defeat tax, 15 counts of willfull failure to file quarterly ITRs, and five counts of willfull failure to file annual ITRs during the five-year period.
The BIR said Tenorio's failure to file his tax returns was in violation of Section 254 and Section 255 of the National Internal Revennue Code (NIRC) of 1997, as amended.
The government said the tax evasionc ase against Tenorio was the 82nd filed under the BIR's "Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program, started by BIR Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares. — LBG, GMA News
