DepEd: 'Sendong'-affected personnel to get calamity loans

The Department of Education on Tuesday assured the availability of calamity loans for its teaching and non-teaching personnel affected by tropical storm "Sendong" (Washi).

In posts on its Twitter account, the DepEd said the funds for the provident loans will come from its provident funds.

"DepEd teaching and non-teaching personnel affected by typhoon 'Sendong' will be provided with calamity loans through DepEd's provident funds," it said.

Last weekend, "Sendong" tore through Mindanao and Visayas, bringing devastating flash floods.

As of Tuesday morning, more than 900 people had been confirmed dead, with the death toll threatening to breach the 1,000 mark.

Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities were among the hardest hit areas.

The DepEd said its Northern Mindanao regional office has released P500,000 for operating expenses of schools being used as evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, the DepEd said it is accepting donations for victims of "Sendong."

It said donations can be brought to its central office in Pasig City and in all its regional offices. –KG, GMA News
