Arguing in favor of nationalism, Australia’s Monash U wins world debate tilt in Manila


Defending champion Monash University of Melbourne, Australia, won the World University Debate Championship (WUDC) at the Philippine International Convention Center Tuesday night.   Monash University’s Team B bagged the WUDC grand finals, with the opening  on Government, “This House supports nationalism.”   Monash U also won the WUDC in 1999 and in 2000.   (See: Two PHL teams in Top 16 of world debate ESL category)   Tel Aviv University won the ESL (English as Second Language) finals, as the opening opposition on the motion, “This house supports scientists who fabricate evidence exaggerating the certainty of man-made climate change where there is a low likelihood of being caught.”   Korea’s Ewha Debating Society Team A won the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) finals as the closing opposition on the motion “This house believes that public education systems should raise the aspirations of children from disadvantaged backgrounds beyond that which is realistic to expect them to achieve.”   Omar Nevo of Tel Aviv A was named ESL Best Speaker, and Goran Jankuloski of Belgrade was named EFL Best Speaker, while Ben Woolgar of Bank Rakyat Oxford Union was named Best Speaker. — With Amanda Lago/VS, GMA News
