Relic of St. Clare of Assisi in PHL for pilgrimage until April

The relic of St. Clare of Assisi is now going on a three-month pilgrimage in the Philippines, making the rounds of archdioceses and Poor Clare monasteries in the country until April. It is the first time the relic will travel outside Italy in the last 800 years, the Department of Foreign Affairs said late Friday. Citing a report from the Philippine Embassy to the Holy See, the DFA said the relic arrived in Manila last Tuesday. Father Jess Dajac, a Filipino priest based in Rome, has been appointed as an official guardian of the St. Clare relic while in the Philippines, it said. "The saint is the patron of navigators, couples who are childless and want to have children, of life and of families. Pope Pius XII designated her as the patron saint of television in 1958, on the basis that when she was too ill to attend Mass, she had reportedly been able to see and hear it on the wall of her room. St. Clare is the patron of Europe and of many places in the Philippines," the DFA said. Philippine Ambassador Mercedes Tuason secured the needed permission from the Federation of Poor Clares based in Foligno in Italy, which owns the relic, as well as from the ecclesiastical authorities of the city of Foligno and the Vatican, through the Congregation of the Causes of the Saints. St. Clare was born in Assisi in Italy on July 16, 1194 and died there on August 11, 1253. Her father was a wealthy Count who owned a large palace and a castle. Her mother belonged to a noble family. From early childhood, she was devoted to prayer and practices of mortification, and had a distaste for the world and yearned for a more spiritual life. She eventually left her life of privilege to become a nun. Relic's itinerary
