DepEd issues guidelines for student summer employment


With many students likely to look for jobs this summer, the Department of Education has released guidelines for those who wait to avail of its Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES). In a news release on the Official Gazette website, the DepEd said its central office may accommodate up to 150 qualified student applicants for this year. SPES is an annual summer employment program that encourages students to be productive and earn extra money during summer by finding work. Under the program, qualified applicants will be employed for 40 days and will be paid minimum wage, 60 percent of which will be paid by DepEd and 40 percent by the Department of Labor and Employment. They will also be given an additional daily allowance on top of their salaries. Procedures The DepEd’s Center for Students and Co-Curricular Affairs (CSCA) issued an application procedure for prospective applicants. Applicants may submit their applications until March 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Qualified to apply are students who are between 15 and 25 years old. Other qualifications include:

- The student must be enrolled this school year (in-school) or if not, must have intention to enroll for the next school year (out-of-school) - The combined annual net income of both parents must not exceed P143,000 and that applicants must have passed all the subjects during the current school year - Applicants must possess office skills, with priority given to those with computer-related skills.
To apply for registration:
- Applicants must answer the self-assessment test provided in the program’s Facebook fanpage, which may be accessed through this URL: www.facebook.com/csca.deped, and email the completed test to depedspes@gmail.com. - The CSCA will email back the schedule of interview and the applicant’s control number, which the applicant must print and bring during the scheduled interview.
Requirements to be submitted prior to the interview include:
- a biodata/resume with a 2-x-2 recent photo, the completed self-assessment form, and birth certificate. - College student applicants must submit recent grades and school registration, preferably for the second semester. - High school students must provide their Form 138, preferably with fourth grading marks. - Out-of-school youths are required to present grades available before dropping out of school and a Certificate of Indigence issued by the barangay where he or she resides. - Income tax returns of both parents. If they are non-filers of ITRs, they must bring an affidavit duly certified by the BIR that the annual net income of both parents does not exceed P143,000.
