Palace exec: PNoy to reappoint Cabinet execs bypassed by appointments body

President Benigno Aquino III has confidence in his Cabinet secretaries that he will reappoint them even if they are bypassed by the bicameral Commission on Appointments, a Palace spokesperson said Thursday.

“For one reason or another, hindi po naa-approve po ‘yung kanilang confirmation. But the President continues to trust in these Cabinet members and so the President will continue to reappoint them,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said at a press briefing.

Among those who have yet to get the nod of the powerful body are Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Soliman, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Jesus Paje, Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez and Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo.

“We hope that at a certain point in time, the Commission on Appointments will find favor with these five Cabinet secretaries and confirm them,” Lacierda said.

The appointment of Domingo Lee as the Philippine Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China (PROC) is also yet to be confirmed.

The CA, composed of members of the Senate and House of Representatives, is expected to hold hearings when the Congress resumes session in May.

The Cabinet members and other appointees who will fail to get the nod of CA by the time the Congress adjourns its session sine die on June 8 are considered bypassed and will need to be reappointed by the President. — Amita Legaspi/RSJ, GMA News
