Recycling is more popular now than in the 1990s or 2000s, a new survey by pollster Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed. The survey, conducted from March 10 to 13 this year, found 31 percent of the respondents always made an effort to segregate glass, tins, plastic or newspaper for recycling. The SWS noted that the latest figure was:
- double the 17 percent figure recorded in December 1993, and
- thrice the 10 percent figure in September 2000.
The survey also showed that two out of three Filipinos believe that global warming is harmful to the environment. Among the Filipino adults who participated in the survey:
- 66 percent said global warming was "dangerous;"
- 27 percent said it was "somewhat dangerous," while
- 7 percent said it was "not dangerous."
Dangers of climate change The survey question was: “In general, do you think that a rise in the world’s temperature caused by climate change is (EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, VERY DANGEROUS, SOMEWHAT DANGEROUS, NOT VERY DANGEROUS, NOT AT ALL DANGEROUS, or CAN’T CHOOSE) for the environment?” However, SWS said while 66 percent said the increasing world temperature was "dangerous" (from "very dangerous" to "extremely dangerous"), the figure was slightly lower compared to:
- the 77 percent figure recorded in September 2000,
- and 71 percent figures recorded in December 1993 and September 2010.
Meanwhile, those who said global warming was "somewhat dangerous" included:
- 27 percent in the 2012 survey;
- 21 percent in December 1993,
- 15 percent in September 2000, and
- 22 percent in September 2010.
Those who claim that the rise in world temperature is not dangerous (not dangerous plus not at all dangerous) remain in marginal proportions below 10 percent since 1993.
Concern for global warming Meanwhile, those who considered the rise in world temperature as dangerous for the environment included:
- 72 percent of the respondents both Metro Manila and Mindanao,
- 64 percent in Balance Luzon, and
- 59 percent in the Visayas .
Concern for global warming is also high in all social classes:
- 66 percent in classes ABC and D, and
- 65 percent in class E.
Majorities in all age groups also share this view:
- 73 percent among 45 to 54 years old,
- 68 percent among 55 and above,
- 65 percent among 25 to 34,
- 64 percent among 35 to 44, and
- 56 percent among 18 to 24.
Seventy-four percent of college graduates believe global warming is dangerous for the environment, higher compared to:
- 66 percent among respondents who obtained up to some elementary,
- 65 percent among those who reached up to some high school, and
- 64 percent among those with some college education.
Efforts to sort recyclables Respondents were asked the question, “How often do you make a special effort to sort glass or tins or plastic or newspapers and so on for recycling (ALWAYS, OFTEN, SOMETIMES, NEVER, or RECYCLING NOT AVAILABLE WHERE I LIVE)?” Among those who said they recycled used glass, newspapers, and other products, about: 31 percent of the respondents said they "always" recycled these products, 24 percent responded "often," 31 percent said "sometimes," and 9 percent said they "never" recycled these products. The remaining 5 percent claimed that recycling was "not available" in the place where they lived. “The latest figures barely vary from September 2010, when 29 percent always, 26 percent often, 32 percent sometimes, and 7 percent never made an effort to sort recyclable materials,” SWS said. SWS also said comparing the March 2012 results with those from one or two decades ago reveals more significant differences. “The latest proportion of 31 percent who always make an effort to sort recyclable materials is nearly double the 17 percent in December 1993, and thrice the 10 percent in September 2000,” it said. The survey was conducted March 10 to 13, using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults in Metro Manila, the balance of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages, ±6% for area percentages applied to the survey.
