Classes in some schools in NCR, Luzon suspended due to rain, SONA

(Updated 8:26 a.m.) - The prospect of floods from heavy rain prompted many schools in Metro Manila and Luzon to suspend classes on Monday up to the high school level.

In Metro Manila, Malabon City officials declared a suspension of classes up to the high school level due to floods and the fact that some schools are still flooded from last weekend's rain.

But some schools, such as the University of Santo Tomas, also cited potential heavy traffic due to the State of the Nation Address as another reason for suspending classes.

"May ibang lugar na lubog sa baha at may iskwelahang naiwanan ng tubig. Para makasiguro sa kaligtasan ng estudyante isususpindi ang klase ngayong araw," Malabon disaster risk reduction and management council head Roderick Tongol said on dzBB radio.

He also said the water levels may rise due to the high tide.

In Manila, UST public affairs head Giovanna Fontanilla cited the problem of flooding and heavy traffic as the reasons for suspending classes in all levels for the day.

"Dahil sa may kalye pa rin na baha at maaaring magkaroon ng mabigat na traffic dahil sa SONA, classes in all levels are suspended the whole day today, July 23, 2012, at UST," Fontanilla said.

Ateneo de Manila University also suspended classes in the grade and high school levels for the day due to the threat of rain.

But university communications director Sonia Araneta said classes and office work at the Loyola Schools and professional schools in Rockwell will proceed as scheduled.

These include the law school, school of business, and medical school, she said.
