OVP to help victims of Storm Gener
Vice President Jejomar Binay on Monday said the Office of the Vice President (OVP) will hold relief operations in areas affected by Tropical Storm Gener (Saola).
In a statement, Binay said his office will conduct relief operations in Sablayan, Mindoro and Bago, Negros Occidental.
He quoted the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council as saying that heavy rains had caused landslides and massive flooding in Occidental Mindoro.
He also said that at least 238 families or about 1,000 people have been evacuated in Bago City and Hinoba-an town in Negros Occidental.
“We are already in coordination with officials of the local governments affected. We only need to check the areas and see what the affected residents need,” he said.
The vice president said the OVP has already sent relief goods to the residents of Baseco Compound who were evacuated to the Baseco covered court.
Earlier in the day, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that at least seven areas remained under storm signals as Gener continued to ravage north Luzon.
It said that as of 10 a.m., Gener was estimated at 360 km east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan or 290 km east southeast of Basco, Batanes.
PAGASA said it is expected to be 210 km east northeast of Basco, Batanes Tuesday morning, and 340 km north of Basco, Batanes Wednesday morning. — Kimberly Jane Tan/RSJ, GMA News
