Probe launched to check Rolito Go's claim NBI agents abducted him
By MARK MERUEÑAS, GMA News
(Updated 4:47 p.m.) The National Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation to determine if there is any truth to the claim of murder convict Rolito Go that he was abducted by NBI agents last Tuesday inside the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.
In a phone interview with GMA News Online, NBI spokesman Cecilio Zamora said he was "surprised" upon learning that Go had implicated the bureau in his disappearance. "Mas malamang ganoon nga, na wala naman kaming kinalaman pero para maka-conclude kami, kailangan kami mag-imbestiga," Zamora said.
Zamora added that it was "impossible" for the NBI to have any hand in Go's disappearance, saying: "Ano ba mapapala namin kay Rolito Go? Ano koneksiyon namin sa kaniya?"
Go's claim of abduction has yet to be proven, Zamora said. Retired Army general Gaudencio Pangilinan, director of the Bureau of Corrections, which oversees the NBP, was earlier quoted as saying that he doubted Go's abduction story. Pangilinan said the convict could have actually tried escaping. The BuCor chief has since gone into an indefinite leave of absence due to the incident.
Abducted?
Go went missing last Tuesday, his disappearance discovered only after the daily roll call. His relatives then claimed Go was taken forcibly from the prison, and that his abductors had demanded a P1-million ransom.
On Wednesday night, Go surfaced and was placed in the custody of the Philippine National Police. On Thursday, he recounted the series of events surrounding his supposed abduction.
Go claimed that men who identified themselves as NBI agents and had NBI identification cards asked him to go with them.
Go said he thought he was merely being taken to the maximum security facility from the minimum security - where he had been transfered due to good conduct over the years while in prison.
To his surprise however, the abductors of Go and his nephew nurse Clemence Yu took them to Sto. Tomas, Batangas. After insisting he does not have ransom to pay, Go's abductors released him and his nephew. The two then boarded a bus back to Metro Manila. 'Pera lang ang gusto nila'
During a press conference at Camp Crame, Go said one of the abductors insisted that they kill their two victims but the other abductors opposed the plan.
"Pera lang ho iyong gusto nila. Noong pinakawalan ako, nakita na siguro na wala akong pera. Tapos kung papatayin din ako wala rin silang makukuha," Go said.
PNP chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome, meanwhile, said their investigation so far showed that Go could have really been forcibly taken out of the NBP.
Bartolome said investigators recovered an empty shell and live ammunition inside the car used to abduct Go.
"Actually, nagpaputok sa loob ng sasakyan... According to Mr. Go ay pinalo pa siya sa ulo kaya nga meron siyang sugat," Bartolome added.
Zamora said the NBI has already sent its personnel to coordinate with the Philippine National Police's Anti-Kidnapping Group, which earlier took custody of Go.
Go has since been returned to the NBP in Muntinlupa City. — RSJ, GMA News
