Typhoon Lawin might hit Cagayan by Thursday night
Typhoon Lawin (Jelawat) may make landfall on the tip of Cagayan province by Thursday night, state weather forecasters said Wednesday afternoon.
PAGASA forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said their models show Lawin passing either the northern tip of Cagayan or passing through the Babuyan Channel.
"Bukas na gabi maaring mag-landfall sa northern tip ng Cagayan area (It is possible Lawin may make landfall on the northern tip of Cagayan Thursday night)," Aurelio said in an interview on dzBB radio.
He said the other possibility is that Lawin might pass through the Babuyan Channel near Extreme Northern Luzon.
As of noon Wednesday, PAGASA estimated Lawin at 420 km east of Tuguegarao City.
Lawin packed maximum sustained winds of 215 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 250 kph, and as moving northwest at 9 kph.
Placed under Storm Signal No. 2 were Batanes, Cagayan, Calayan and Babuyan Islands.
Under Signal No. 1 are Ilocos Norte, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra and Isabela. — TJD, GMA News
