The San Beda College of Law, through its Committee on Student Conduct, has approved the penalty of exclusion against 27 of its students found to be members of the Lex Leonum fraternity and whose initiation rites were allegedly the reason for the death of Marc Andre Marcos in hazing rites last July 30. The committee also suspended eight other Bedans who "have shown remorse" after violating the College's students' code of conduct.
The committee came out with the list dated October 23, in relation to an administrative investigation on the violation of the college’s students' code of conduct. The document was approved on Monday after being endorsed to the college’s Office of the Rector.
There were three forms of punishment. The first and most severe was applied to 27 Lex Leonum fraternity members—whose initiation rites were allegedly the reason for Marcos’ death—identified by substantial evidence and who did not renounce their membership. The 27 (listed below) are to be punished with exclusion: 1. Alano, Erich Justine 2. Alcancia, Julius Arsenio 3. Alim, Mohammad Fyzee 4. Amante, Chino Daniel 5. Baltazar, Daniel 6. Cabangon, Rem 7. Cabansag, Manuel Adrian 8. Circa, Dexter 9. David, Aldrian Robert 10. Dela Cruz, Aardan Mikhail Kutch 11. Esguerra, Jason 12. Favorito, Bjone Carlo 13. Juico, Ralph 14. Lalusis, Levy John 15. Marcelo, Cornelio 16. Opelanio, Michael Jethro 17. Rafols, Kenneth 18. Recto, John Cromwell 19. Reyes, Lorenzo Marvin 20. Rivera, John Ray 21. Rodriguez, Reynaldo Anthony Marc 22. Yebra, Aloysius The second group is composed of identified Lex Leonum members who renounced their membership and “have shown remorse” for violating the Code of Conduct. They are to be suspended for 21 school days and charged with 72 hours of community service: 1. Aranas, David Anthony 2. Go, Rom-Raison 3. Nagtalon, Eryl Royce The last group is composed Lex Leonum applicants who were assured that the application process was “solemn and reasonable” and “have shown remorse” for violating the Code of Conduct and cooperated in the administrative investigation. They are to be suspended for 7 school days and charged with 36 hours of community service: 1. Dalisay, Reynaldo Jr. 2. Lara, Ephraim Daniel 3. Lopez, Enrico 4. Maranan, Christopher Ryan 5. Ragaza, Jan Marcel The document also recommended the exoneration of one Jade Ashley Manguera from the administrative charge, citing lack of evidence of his involvement in the fraternity. Marcos died from
extensive traumatic injuries in his upper and lower extremities as a result of alleged initiation rites of the Lex Leonum Fraternity at a Dasmariñas, Cavite, farm. The San Beda School of Law and its student government earlier condemned the hazing incident. It has also said it does not recognize the existence of fraternities and sororities. An alumnus of the fraternity contacted by GMA News Online declined to comment on the matter because he has not yet seen the resolution. Meanwhile, GMA News said it has also yet to get a reaction from members of the fraternity. Marcos’ uncle, Viney Ibarra, said that he welcomed the exclusion decision against 27 of the students. In a phone interview, he said though this development was a positive step, he also shared his disappointment with the suspension decision, particularly against the neophytes. However, despite all of these, he said “the real battle is in the criminal case,” of which only a preliminary investigation has been started. Last August, police
filed murder charges against 37 suspects involved in the death of Marcos.
