Cop in Quezon clash unaware of raps filed by one of 13 slain men
The police official who was wounded in Sunday’s shootout in Quezon province said he is unaware of any complaint filed against him two months ago by one of 13 men killed in the incident. “Wala naman akong alam na kaso. Wala namang notice na nakakarating sa akin. Kung meron, I'll fight it out,” Superintendent Hansel Marantan, intelligence officer of the Region IV-A police office, said in a phone interview with GMA News’ Sandra Aguinaldo on Wednesday. Marantan was the only policeman hurt during the supposed encounter in Atimonan town, which left 13 alleged members of a gun-for-hire group killed. The fatalities included three policemen and an environmentalist. The Philippine Star reported that Marantan was sued for multiple murder last November by Gerry Siman, one of the 13 men killed in last Sunday's encounter. The report said the charges stemmed from the killing of six men, supposedly gun-for-hire members, in an encounter in Calamba City in Laguna. Maratnan said those killed in the Laguna encounter were bet collectors working for Victorino Siman, who was also killed in the supposed shootout in Quezon province. “They were armed with M16 and .45 calibre. Sila kasi, pino-front nila yung bookies, pero inside bookies, gun-for-hire,” Maratnan said. Aside from the reported multiple murder complaint, Maratnan is also facing a homicide case before the Pasig City Regional Trial Court in connection with the November 2005 deaths of three suspected car thieves in an alleged rubout in Ortigas. The National Police Commission (Napolcom), meanwhile, said Maratnan has no pending administrative case. — Andreo C. Calonzo/KBK, GMA News
