Ground leader in Atimonan shooting undergoes minor surgery

The ground commander in the Jan. 6 shooting in Atimonan, Quezon that left 13 people dead underwent minor surgery Wednesday to close a wound in his left arm.

Philippine National Police Health Service director Chief Superintendent Maria Angela Vidal said the surgery on Police Superintendent Hansel Marantan was done at the PNP General Hospital, radio dzBB reported.

Vidal was quoted in the report as saying they are also considering bringing him to the St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig City for further procedures.

She said Marantan, who was shot in the Jan. 6 operation, had felt numbness in his arm and fingers.

Marantan was brought back to his ward at the PNP General Hospital after the surgery.

Meanwhile, a separate report by dzBB's Tuesday Niu said Marantan may be transferred to the Kiangan billeting area in Camp Crame once he is discharged.

The report quoted Vidal as saying if Marantan's wounds are healing well, he can be released from confinement.

But Marantan will then be brought to the Kiangan billeting center where the other police personnel linked to the incident are now staying.

They will stay there while the probe into the incident is ongoing and so long as their presence is needed in hearings.

Marantan earlier surrendered his firearm and gave a statement to the National Bureau of Investigation, the agency tasked by President Benigno Aquino III to probe the incident.  — ELR. GMA News
