DepEd to schools: Ensure students' security during field trips

Following a deadly field trip accident that claimed the life of a high school student last weekend, the Department of Education is pushing schools to ensure the security of students during such activities.

DepEd communications director Tina Ganzon reminded schools to plan and iron out security plans before pushing through with field trips, radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported Tuesday.

Ganzon was also quoted in the report as saying they will help look into last weekend's incident.

Last weekend, a field trip turned fatal for a 14-year-old high school student after a tourist bus hit her while she was taking photos of her classmates in Tanay, Rizal.

Rio Bianca Ramirez, a second-year student of the Holy Spirit Academy in Malolos in Bulacan, was killed in the accident, while one of her classmates was in critical condition.

Tanay police have taken custody of bus driver Carlos Villanueva, who said he got down from the bus to get water for the bus' radiator.

He said he was surprised to see the bus moving because he had activated the handbrake.
