BFP reminds Filipinos of fire prevention measures


March is Fire Prevention Month, and in line with this, the Bureau of Fire Protection gave tips anew on preventing fires and how to act should there be one.
 
BFP-National Capital Region director Chief Supt. Santiago Laguna on GMA News TV’s “Kape at Balita” on Friday gave a rundown of the things people should always remember, not just during Fire Prevention Month every day of the year:
 
- Avoid smoking while getting gas (Iwasang manigarilyo kapag magpapagasolina)
 
- Refrain from being near/using fire when inspecting gas tanks, radiators, or batteries (huwag gagamit ng apoy kapag may ininspeksyong tanke ng gasolina, radiator o baterya)
 
- Have a portable fire extinguisher inside your car (magkabit ng portable fire extinguisher sa loob ng sasakyan)
 
- Frequently check your car’s wiring insulation to prevent short circuits (madalas suriin ang wiring insulation ng sasakyan para maiwasang magkaroon ng short circuit)
 
- Do not throw a cigarette that is still lit (huwag magtatapon ng may sinding sigarilyo)
 
- Avoid smoking inside your house, especially on the sofa or the bed (iwasang manigarilyo sa loob ng bahay lalo na sa may sofa o sa kama)
 
- Have an ashtray or ashtrays inside your home (siguraduhing may ashtray sa loob ng bahay)
 
- Follow “No Smoking” signs (sundin ang no smoking signs)
 
- Before throwing a cigarette, make sure it is properly stubbed out (Siguradhing napitpit mabuti ang upos ng sigariliyo bago ito itapon)
 
- Frequently check your electrical installations (laging suriin an mga elektrikal na instilasyon)
 
- Have a licensed electrician repair broken or old electrical wiring (ipaayos sa isang licensed electiriacian anmg sira at lumang kawad ng kuryente)
 
- Do not replace a broken fuse with coins, cable or other types of metals (huwag palitan ang mga sirang fuse ng barya, kable o ibang klase ng metal)
 
- Before leaving the house, make sure all appliances are unplugged (bago umalis ng bahay, siguraduhing nakatagnggal ang saksakan)
 
- Do not run in case your clothes catch fire (huwag tumakbo kapag nasilaban ng apoy ang suot na dami); roll on the ground while covering your face to put the fire out (dumapa sa sahig; magpakikot ikot habang tinatakpan ang iyong mukha para mapatay ang apoy)
 
- Avoid keeping highly flammable objects inside the house such as gasoline, alcohol, or paint (iwasang magtago sa loob ng bahay ng gamit na maadaling masunod gaya ng gasolina alkohol o pintura)
 
- Always keep a first-aid kit (siguraduhing may first aid kid na laging handa)
 
- Always keep a copy of the nearest fire department’s telephone number (maglagay ng kopya ng tel numbers na pinakamalapit na fire department sa tabi ng telepono)
 
- Throw away papers that are not/cannot be used anymore as these are highly flammable (itapon ang mga papel na hindi ginagamit dahil madaling masunog ang mga ito)
 
- In case of fire, it is important to stay calm; take the appropriate actions (kapag may sunog, manatiling kalmado; umaskyon at gumawa ng nararapapat na kilos kapag may sunog)  — Gian C. Geronimo/ELR, GMA News
