Deputy chief of PNP Internal Affairs killed

Six unidentified suspects gunned down Senior Insp. Renato Marasigan, the deputy chief of the National Police Internal Affairs Service, during a Wednesday morning ambush in Malinao village in Pasig City. Senior Supt. Romeo Abaring, Pasig City police officer-in-charge, told GMA 7's DZBB that the gunmen were armed with .45-cal. handguns. Marasigan was onboard his vehicle around 10:30 a.m. when the armed men ambushed him at Japson Street. Marasigan sustained several gunshot wounds in his body. He died on the spot. He was driving his white Pajero going when four of the six suspects fired at him. The assailants fled onboard a passenger jeepney towards Pateros. Marasigan's family said the killing was likely connected with the investigation being conducted by the victim on the reported involvement of some police officials on the operations of a shabu 'mart' in Pasig City. The police Internal Affairs Service Intelligence and Investigation Division where Marasigan was detailed has authority to investigate erring law enforcers. Venus, the victim’s wife, said her husband fought illegal drugs and corruption. "Mainit na siya dito, Galit siya sa droga, galit siya sa korapsyon," he told GMA News. Chief Supt. Charlemagne Alejandrino, Eastern Police District chief, said they were also investigating the possibility that rebel soldiers killed Marasigan. "May possibility iyan CPP-NPA (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army) ‘yan dahil kagabi nasa loob kami ng pagpupulong at ang isang pinag-usapan ay pag-iingat sa anibersaryo ng CPP-NPA," he said. Operatives of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Pasig City Police and EPD have started a joint investigation to track down the suspects. They are now talking with the witnesses for the immediate identification of the suspects.-GMANews.TV
