Watch electric fans, BFP advises Pinoys as summer heat continues
With the summer heat showing no signs of relenting, Filipinos were advised Tuesday to keep a closer eye on their electric fans lest they trigger fires.
Bureau of Fire Protection officer-in-charge Chief Superintendent Carlito Romero said overheating or short-circuiting fans are a common cause of fire.
A report on dzBB radio early Tuesday quoted Romero as saying electric fans with plastic components are liable to trigger fires once they overheat.
Romero also advised owners of electric fans to clean the appliance every two days or so to prevent dust from building up.
But he also urged manufacturers of electric fans to install mechanisms that would shut off the fans once they detect overheating or a short circuit.
"Dapat lagyan ng device o system na 'pag nag-overheat ang electric fan, maka-cut ang supply ng kuryente," he said.
State weather forecasters had indicated temperatures will continue to go up until May. The highest temperature recorded so far this year was 39.6 degrees Celsius in Echague, Isabela last April 6. —KG, GMA News
