PAGASA: Huaning weakens as it leaves PAR, moves toward South China

Typhoon Huaning (international code name Soulik) weakened after making landfall over Taiwan but continued to move toward Southern China even as it exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday morning, state weather forecasters said.

However, PAGASA forecaster Jun Galang said fishermen in the Northern and Central Luzon should still not venture out to sea yet because of big waves generated by Typhoon Huaning/Soulik.

"Pinapayuhan natin na huwag pumalaot sa seaboard ng Northern and Central Luzon," Galang said in an interview on government-run dzRB radio.

He said big waves may still occur in Ilocos Norte, Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan; and in Aurora, Zambales and Bataan.

PAGASA's 11:00 a.m. advisory said that as of 10:00 a.m., Huaning/Soulik was estimated at 450 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph.

PAGASA said Huaning/Soulik was forecast to move northwest at 20 kph, and is expected to be 630 km north-northwest of Itbayat, Batanes or 240 km northwest of Northern Taiwan Saturday night.

The typhoon may still bring rainfall of 4 to 35 mm per hour (moderate to torrential) within its 700-km diameter.

"Fishermen especially those using small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon due to big waves generated by Typhoon Huaning," it said. - VVP, GMA News
