(Updated 12: 05 p.m.) President Benigno Aquino on Saturday visited residents of Zamboanga City who were forced to flee their homes due to days of clashes between government troops and Moro National Liberation Front forces, and assured them the crisis will be over soon.

Aquino went to the Baliwasan Grandstand after 10 a.m. and reassured the evacuees there that Zamboanga City has enough supply of food for the next two weeks, government-run PTV-4 reported.

On the other hand, Vice President Jejomar Binay said he was on his way to Zamboanga City to join Aquino.

“Malalampasan ang krisis sa Zamboanga City sa lalong madaling panahon (Zamboanga City will get through this crisis soonest),” Aquino added.

For her part, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte on Saturday said Aquino assured the residents of continued government support and assistance.

Also she said that as far as she knows, Aquino spent Friday night in Zamboanga City. She said the Palace cannot say until when he will stay there “for security reasons.”

Meanwhile, a tweet by the city government said there were 7,779 families or 39,260 people displaced by the clashes.

It added there are 3,060 families or 13,343 people in satellite evacuation centers.

Earlier, an official of the Armed Forces of the Philippines said the death toll from nearly a week armed confrontation in the city rose to 52.

AFP public affairs head Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said at least 52 had been killed including four civilians and 43 MNLF members.

"[Nalagasan na tayo]... konektado sa ongoing operations. (But) rest assured kahit merong nalagas we will press the fight para maprotektahan ang civilians," Zagala said in an interview with reporters in Zamboanga City, parts of which were aired on dzBB radio early Saturday.

He said the fatalities as of Saturday morning included:

- five police/military personnel killed in action
- 43 MNLF members
- four civilians

At least 46 government forces were wounded in action, he added.

Also, he said at least 19 MNLF members have surrendered or have been captured so far.

On the other hand, he said 20 civilians were wounded.

The crisis in Zamboanga City entered its sixth day Saturday, with the MNLF still holding on to civilian hostages.
