After 9 days in Zamboanga, PNoy flies back to Manila to 'attend to other matters'

(Updated 4:54 p.m.) President Benigno Aquino III on Sunday afternoon flew back to Manila after spending nine days in Zamboanga City personally overseeing government efforts to mitigate the crisis there.

“May ibang bagay na akong kailangan tugunan, kagaya nung pork barrel [scam,]” Aquino said in a press conference.

“I have to check siyempre on other parts of the country, kung naasikaso ng gobyerno. Pati yung mga napabayaan kong trabaho the past week. Lalo na nandito na sila sa stage ng investigation at pagfa-file ng kaso sa PDAF [Priority Development Assistance Fund], amongst other things,” he added.

The President flew to Zamboanga on Sept. 13, the fifth day of the now two-week long crisis that has seen at least 127 dead since it started September 9. The attack of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels on several villages has resulted in at least P4 billion in damages to the city.

Government troops have since retaken most of the MNLF-controlled areas in the city.

Aquino earlier said he wouldn’t leave Zamboanga until the crisis is over.

"Pipilitin ko [na hindi umalis] hanggang matapos itong immediate na crisis," Aquino told reporters on his arrival at the Zamboanga City Airport, which resumed operations Thursday after more than a week of cancelled flights.

At the press briefing on Sunday, Aquino said the government is taking pains to make those responsible for the attack pay for their misdeeds.

“Hindi ko naman maga-guarantee na hindi na ito mangyayari [uli], pero inuusig namin si [Nur] Misuari na managot sa ginawa niya. May kaso nang inihahanda ang DOJ [Department of Justice],” he said.

Aquino's plane took off from the Edwin Andrews Air Base in Zamboanga City at about 3:40 p.m., radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. reported.

The report also said that Secretaries Voltaire Gazmin (Defense), Manuel Roxas II (Interior) and Corazon Soliman (Social Welfare) are to stay and oversee the rehabilitation phase. — Patricia Denise Chiu/BM, GMA News
