Winners proclaimed in 73% of barangays – Comelec

Close to 75 percent of the country's barangays have proclaimed the winners in the October 28 barangay elections as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

This translates to 30,790 barangays, or 73.26 percent of the  country's total 42,028 barangays, according to the matrix read out by Comelec deputy executive for operations Bartolome J. Sinocruz, Jr.

Meanwhile, at least 11,238 villages or 26.74 percent of the total have ongoing canvassing of official ballots and pending reports of proclamations made, the Comelec list said.

These include those that postponed elections due to various reasons, particularly those in quake-hit Bohol and Zamboanga City where the village polls were earlier reset, Sinocruz said.

Poll chief Sixto Brillantes Jr. said all barangays that have conducted elections on October 28 may finish their proclamations by Wednesday.

"We expect to finish this all in another day except those which will reset their elections. This will be a fast-moving proclamation," he said.

"Right now, we're only less than 24 hours, an'dun na tayo sa 75 percent. By tonight or tomorrow, we may be able to complete the rest," Brillantes added.

The elections were also postponed in some barangays in Maguindanao, Basilan, Lanao Del Norte, Calayan island in Cagayan, and North Cotabato, according to the Comelec Election and Barangay Affairs Department.

Elections were held Tuesday in some barangays in Samar and Maguindanao, it added.

By Monday afternoon, Comelec had received 28 reports of election-related peace and security concerns that happened on October 27 and on the elections day itself. Brillantes said these were "isolated cases." — KBK, GMA News
