Landslides destroy key roads in Agusan provinces and Lanao del Norte


Landslides destroyed sections of the Maharlika Highway in Agusan del Sur and Agusan del Norte. Parts of the highway, especially the section near Butuan City, collapsed as the ground gave way after due to continuous heavy rainfall, GMA News' Hadji Rieta reported in the “24 Oras” early evening newscast.
 
As a temporary remedy, the local Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) laid down gravel and rocks to allow passage along the route. However, only motorcycles can push through the makeshift routes
 
"Kung hindi natin kailangang lumabas ng bahay o kailangang pumunta ng Butuan, o 'di naman importante, mag-stay na lang tayo sa bahay," said Engr. Ruby Pojadas, DPWH Director for Agusan Del Sur.
 
"Sa ganitong sitwasyon, hirap talaga sa pag-transport ng mga tao," she added.
 
Lanao del Norte
 
Landslides and muddy roads hampered travels in Iligan City, Lanao Del Norte, GMA News'  Dano Tingcungco reported.
 
People have resorted to crossing the Bayog River in Iligan City, Lanao Del Norte to get to other barangays.
 
Strong and changing currents have caused delays in the construction of bridges in Iligan. Because of the strong waves, only military-grade trucks can pass through the waters with no problems.
 
"Tinawid namin kahit malalim talaga. Marami (kasing) landslide sa bundok," said a resident who ferried a habal-habal with other men over the river. 
 
The 4th Mechanized Infantry Battalion said there was a landslide in Rogongon, Iligan city. The highway, connecting Iligan City to Bukidnon, is still undergoing clearing operations nearly 12 hours after the landslide.  — RT/ELR, GMA News
