DOJ to study possible ‘pork’ raps vs. Revilla Sr

(Updated 4:18 p.m.) The Department of Justice (DOJ) will study the possibility of filing charges against former Senator Ramon Revilla Sr. for reportedly funneling millions from his pork barrel funds to fake foundations linked to controversial businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles.

In an interview Wednesday, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), which is under her watch, will pursue a probe against Revilla Sr. if whistleblower Benhur Luy will substantiate his claims.

“Pag-aaralan ng NBI. If willing si Benhur Luy na mag-execute ng sworn statement, ipu-pursue dapat iyon,” De Lima told reporters after attending a Senate inquiry on rice smuggling.

She added that the allegations against Revilla Sr. are not yet included in Luy's sworn statements that are currently with the DOJ.

Earlier in the day, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported, based on information from Luy, that Revilla Sr. diverted P35 million from his Priority Development Assistance Fund to Napoles's bogus non-government organizations between 2003 and 2004.

Revilla Sr.'s son, Sen. Ramon Bong Revilla Jr., meanwhile belied Luy's allegations, saying that these are just fabricated claims backed by Malacañang.

“Nakita nila na naapektuhan itong mga whistleblowers na ito kaya nag-imbento na sila ganito. Kitang-kita natin kung sino ang nagsususi sa kanila: Malacañang. Noong tinira ko ang Malacañang, ito agad ang pinasabi nila,” the younger Revilla said in a separate interview.

He added that his father has nothing to hide regarding the use of government funds.

“Masakit. Why my father pa? Naka-wheelchair na 'yung tatay ko. May sakit. Pati siya dinamay pa. Anong klaseng mga tao ito? Walang puso,” the incumbent senator said.

On Monday, the 86-year-old Revilla Sr., who served as senator from 1992 to 2004, was seen crying on a wheelchair when Revilla Jr. delivered a privilege speech denying involvement in the alleged pork barrel anomaly.

The younger Revilla is currently facing a plunder complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman for allegedly pocketing the biggest kickbacks from the alleged pork barrel scam amounting to P224.5 million. — KBK, GMA News
