Palace lauds religious group for solidarity with Yolanda victims 1st before world record

Malacañang on Sunday praised a religious group for the success of its charity walk on Saturday for the survivors of super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), even as the event has set a new world record in the process.

But Presidential Communications Operations Office head Herminio Coloma Jr. said what is more important to the Palace is the solidarity the Iglesia ni Cristo members showed to survivors of the calamity.

"Ang mahalaga sa naganap kahapon ang pagpapakita o manifestation ng pakikiisa sa ating kababayan na nasalanta ng kalamidad," he said on government-run dzRB radio.

"(Yung) pagkakaroon ng record, 'yan ang naging consequence ng pagkakawagnggawa at pagmamalasakit na pinupuri natin," he added.

Iglesia ni Cristo members on Saturday held a walk for a cause in Manila, wearing white shirts and wristbands for the occasion.

On Saturday evening, a representative of Guinness World Records confirmed the walk broke a 14-year-old record for a charity walk.

Saturday's walk for a cause also sought to raise funds for survivors of Yolanda, which devastated Visayas and Southern Luzon last November and left more than 6,200 people dead. — LBG, GMA News
