FDA: Doc’s prescription not needed for 20% discount for OTC medicines

Senior citizens need not present a doctor's prescription to avail of a 20-percent discount for over-the-counter medicines.

But the Food and Drug Administration also said senior citizens must show their purchase slip booklets to avail of such a privilege.

"The public is further informed that a doctor’s prescription is not required for over-the-counter medicines to avail of the 20-percent discount," it said in advisory 2014-054.

Also, it reminded all drug outlets and hospital pharmacies to grant the discount on medicines purchased by senior citizens upon presentation of any of the following requirements that include:

- Identification card issued by the city or municipal mayor or Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) or the barangay captain of the place where the senior citizen resides
- the Philippine passport of the senior citizen concerned
- other government-issued identification documents indicating an elderly's birthdate such as: driver's license, voters ID, SSS/GSIS ID, PRC card, and postal ID

"Senior citizens must also bring their Purchase Slip Booklets for the purpose of recording the medicines purchased for every transaction," the FDA said. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
