320,000 evacuated in Albay due to Typhoon Glenda

More than 320,000 people had been evacuated to safer ground in Albay province, in the wake of severe weather conditions brought by Typhoon Glenda (Rammasun), Albay Governor Joey Salceda said late Tuesday.

Salceda posted on his Facebook account Tuesday evening a photo of a page from a report on the effects of Glenda on Albay.

In the report, 65,082 families or 320,784 people had been evacuated as of 5 p.m.

This included 63,078 families or 310,363 evacuated due to floods, and 2,004 families or 10,421 people evacuated due to winds and storm surge.

While a handwritten note from the Office of Civil Defense suggested that a state of calamity be declared since those affected already comprised more than 20 percent of the population, Salceda did not indicate if he agreed.

Earlier Tuesday, Glenda made landfall on parts of Bicol, and is expected to head for Southern Luzon including Metro Manila.

13 passengers rescued off Masbate

Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard said 13 passengers of a motor banca were rescued off Masbate Monday.

The Coast Guard said members of its Aroroy substation rescued the passengers of the motor banca "Mabie," which encountered engine trouble off Aroroy in Masbate.

Investigation showed the vessel encountered engine trouble due to very rough sea condition in the area. —Joel Locsin/NB, GMA News
