Enrile leaves PGH for Camp Crame after medical checkup

After undergoing a checkup, Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile left the Philippine General Hospital in Manila before noon Monday.

Enrile boarded an ambulance that was part of a convoy shortly after 11 a.m., radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.

He is expected to return to Philippine National Police headquarters at Camp Crame. Enrile is detained at the PNP General Hospital there.

The PGH is expected to submit a report to the Sandiganbayan about the results of Monday's tests.

PGH director Dr. Jose Gonzalez said they expect Enrile to return Thursday for another round of medical checkups.

Enrile arrived at the PGH at about 8 a.m. Monday and was brought to the hospital's cardiology department for tests.

Last July, Enrile's lawyer Estelito Mendoza told the Sandiganbayan his client has a heart condition that may potentially be fatal if he is detained in a facility other than a hospital.

The Sandiganbayan's Third Division ordered PGH director Jose Gonzalez and or any of his duly authorized representatives to conduct a medical exam on Enrile, and submit a recommendation "on whether there is imperative need" for Enrile's continued confinement at the PNP General hospital.

Enrile is one of three senators facing graft and plunder charges over the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam.

He and his co-accused are alleged to have amassed P172.8 million in kickbacks from 2004 to 2010 through nongovernment organizations put up by trader Janet Lim-Napoles.
