Housing remains a problem for some of Yolanda survivors in Samar
The people of Basey, Samar is now starting to move forward after super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) battered the area last year. However, many residents still have no permanent housing, a report on 24 Oras said on Wednesday.
There are still those who live in no-dwelling zones or danger zones and 6,700 families need to be relocated. Some families who used to stay in bunkhouses went back to their old homes because they were near their sources of livelihood.
Others like Alicia Altagracia's family were not given bunkhouses because their homes were not completely wiped out.
Altagracia said, "Hindi kami binigyan ng bunkhouse. Sabi 'yung bibigyan lang daw ay 'yung washed out."
As regards these problems, the local government of Basey explained that they were still waiting instructions from the National Housing Authority (NHA).
Meanwhile, the NHA officials said that the plan had already started but it was still waiting for the Sangguniang Bayan's resolution allowing them to use the parcel of land as a relocation site.
According to Basey administrator Balbino Estorinos, 70 percent of the areas had now recovered with the help of national agencies and non-government organizations.
The local government has also said that various groups such as the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority are giving skills training for the residents. —Trisha Macas/NB, GMA News
