Grace Poe bares one reason why she won't run in 2016

Senator Grace Poe on Tuesday doesn't want to go through what her father, actor Fernando Poe Jr., experienced in 2004.

"Anong makapipigil sa'kin? 'Yung experience ng tatay ko, 'yung experience on what he went through noong 2004 is still fresh in my mind somehow," Poe told reporters when asked what would keep her from seeking higher office in the 2016 elections.

The actor Poe ran in 2004 as the opposition's standard-bearer against then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Arroyo was proclaimed the winner with 12,905,808 votes as against Poe's 11,782,232 votes.

After his defeat, the actor's camp questioned the election results before the Supreme Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, but the high court dismissed the electoral protest in 2005 following Fernando Poe Jr.'s death in December 2004.

Also in 2005, Mrs. Arroyo admitted calling then elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano during the counting of the votes after the 2004 elections.

In the the so-called "Hello Garci" tapes, Mrs. Arroyo was alleged to have directed Garcillano to ensure that she will have a lead of a million votes over the late Fernando Poe Jr.

Poe spoke to reporters after she addressed the Girl Scouts of the Philippines' Chief Girl Scout Medal Presentation Ceremony on Tuesday in Manila. She was the guest of honor and speaker at the event.

'Ambisyosa'

Poe said she didn't want the public to think that she was too ambitious.

"Dapat talagang nag-iingat dahil unang-una, ayaw kong matawag na masyadong ambisyosa -- pinagbigyan ka na nga na makapaglingkod sa pwestong ito, mangangarap ka pa ng ganyan, unless siguro kung mapatunayang kakayanin ko, pero sa ngayon hindi ko pa naiisip dahil sa Senado, ang dami na naming ginagawa," she said.

She also admitted that there were others who had more experience.

"May mga nagsasabi naman na bago palang ako and totoo naman iyon," she said.

'No offers'

Meanwhile, Poe stressed that she has yet to receive any offers for the 2016 elections despite being linked to some politicians eyeing the presidential seat.

"Sa totoo lang, walang nakikipag-usap sa akin... Sa media ko lang naririnig," she said.

Vice President Jejomar Binay was quoted as saying he was open to a possible team-up with Poe in the 2016 elections

Members of Binay's United Nationalist Alliance are also reportedly discussing the possibility of Poe being the Vice President's running mate.

However, Poe said Binay had not talked to her on the possible tandem, considering that UNA dropped her as their candidate in the senatorial elections.

"Hindi ko alam kasi hindi niya sinabi sa'kin ng direkta. Kung naalala ninyo, noong dose ang pinagpilian, hindi kami nasama..." she said.

UNA early in the 2013 campaign dropped Poe, Senators Chiz Escudero and Loren Legarda as guest candidates after they skipped the opposition slate's senatorial rallies.

Before being dropped, the three were common candidates of both the opposition UNA and the Liberal Party-led administration coalition. —NB, GMA News
