PNP pushes Oplan Lambat Sibat vs. criminality
The Philippine National Police is aiming to improve its performance in neutralizing criminality, with a plan that zeroes in on groups behind crimes such as robberies and holdups.
Dubbed Oplan Lambat Sibat, the PNP plan involves focusing on at least 10 of the most notorious criminal gangs, according to a report on GMA News' Unang Balita.
Earlier, PNP director for intelligence Director Charles Calima Jr. said 10 of the 61 active crime gangs are on their priority list.
"Pinag-aralan namin 'yung crime incidents for the first nine months of this year and base roon… We identified 61 crime gangs that are involved sa mga krimen...Nakita namin na may 10 grupo that (are) responsible for 41 percent crimes committed," he said at a roadshow of the Interior Department and PNP's programs at the GMA Network's offices in Quezon City.
While Calima declined to name the groups, he said they are usually involved in robbery and holdups, and target those withdrawing money from banks, money changers and remittance centers.
For his part, Interior secretary Manuel Roxas II said that of 440 people on the PNP's most wanted persons list, 120 have been arrested.
Of the 416 members of crime gangs, 52 have been captured and detained.
Roxas also said the DILG will strengthen the PNP with equipment and closed-circuit television in police stations and precincts, as well as a crime registry and digitized data capture system and a national emergency hotline. — Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
