DOH gives tips vs. piccolo poisoning
With the piccolo likely to be mistaken for candy especially by children, the Department of Health over the weekend issued tips on how to protect children from piccolo poisoning.
In infographics posted on its social media accounts Sunday, the DOH said piccolo contains yellow phosphorus, which can kill humans if 50 to 100 mg of it is ingested.
"Piccolo is very poisonous because it contains the substance yellow phosphorus. The estimated human lethal dose is 50 to 100 milligrams," it said.

The DOH gave these tips:
- If piccolo is swallowed: Do not induce vomiting and give children six to eight raw egg whites, or adults eight to 12 raw egg whites. Bring the child to the nearest hospital.
- If piccolo is caught in the eye: Immediately wash with water for at least 15 minutes. Keep eyelids open. Seek immediate medical assistance.
- If skin is affected: Immediately wash affected areas with water. Remove contaminated clothing, and make sure it is washed before reusing. Seek medical attention.
- If inhaled: Let patient breathe in fresh air. Keep him or her comfortable and warm. Seek urgent medical assistance.
