One PNPA cadet fails to graduate on time for conduct offense

One senior cadet of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) was not allowed to graduate on Thursday due to a minor offense in conduct.

In a chance interview a few minutes before the start of the PNPA's 36th commencement exercises at Camp General Mariano Castañeda in Silang, Cavite, PNPA spokesperson Chief Inspector Richie Yatar said there was supposed to be a total of 247 cadets set to receive their diplomas on Thursday. However, one of them, a male cadet, was struck off from the list a few weeks before the day of their graduation.

Yatar said that about a month ago, the cadet committed a minor offense in the PNPA rules pertaining to conduct, thus, the cadet had to undergo some punishments before he was to be allowed to graduate.

"Gra-graduate naman siya. Minor naman ang offense niya. 'Yun nga lang, meron siyang mga additional tasks na kailangang i-perform as penalty," Yatar said.

Yatar said that though the cadet, whom he refused to name, will not be graduating with the rest of his peers on Thursday, the latter will still be able to obtain his diploma by April for his Bachelor of Science degree in Public Safety.

"The expected completion of his additional tasks is by April. Hindi nga lang siya kasama sa ceremony ngayon but he will be able to obtain his diploma," Yatar said.

Yatar refused to elaborate on the offense committed by the cadet but clarified that it does not involve cheating or anything to do with honesty and ethics.

"Violation sa ating Code of Honesty is considered a major offense. Kapag ganun, dismissal talaga. Itong sa kanya, minor lang naman. Pero lagi tayong patas dito sa PNPA. There are punishments that must be served (against him)," Yatar said.

Last year, a senior cadet of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) also failed to graduate for alleged "lying" which is considered a major violation of the Code of Honesty. —KG, GMA News
