Family of PNPA cadet in alleged hazing refuses autopsy

Family members of the police cadet who died during alleged hazing rites in the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) refused offers to have the student's remains to be autopsied, GMANews.TV learned Monday. The family of Cadet 4th Class Jeoffrey Corto refused to issue further comments on the matter, despite fears of possible foul play in the cadet's death. Corto, a member of PNPA's Batch 2010, died while on his 2nd day of physical training at the academy. Authorities reported that Corto died of heart failure. The victim's mother Sonia Corto earlier said her son was in good health when Jeoffrey began studying at the academy six months ago. Corto's colleagues in PNPA said the victim complained of difficulty breathing on the night of April 21 and was immediately rush to PNPA medical station. Later that evening, he was transferred to the Adventist University of the Philippines medical hospital. He passed away at 11:07 p.m. Senior Supt. Cesar Binag, PNPA commandant, denied that hazing has been the academy's policy to instill discipline within the ranks.-GMANews.TV
