DepEd School Year 2015-2016 starts on June 1
The Department of Education said the next school year of the country's public elementary schools and public high schools will start on June 1 and end on April 1, 2016.
"The school year will consist of 201 school days, inclusive of the five-day In-Service Training (INSET) break," DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro said in Department Order No. 9, which provided the details of the new academic calendar.
Luistro said that while private schools may deviate from this school calendar, they should start classes between June 1 and Aug. 31.
He added the private schools should also notify the appropriate DepEd officials in advance regarding any deviation.
Luistro said schools may observe national and local celebrations, holidays and advocacy activities other than those in the school calendar, "provided that the total number of school days shall not be compromised."
"Make-up classes can therefore be conducted to compensate for the school days spent for activities deemed beneficial to the learning-teaching process. Likewise, make-up classes are recommended in lieu of no-school days due to occurrence of a natural and man-made calamities," he said.
Luistro also said a mechanism for having make-up classes must be agreed upon by school administrators and parents.
The regional office may issue a regional school calendar to reflect their respective concerns, the DepEd chief said. — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
