New traffic scheme imposed around NAIA
A new "discipline zone" and stricter towing rules for double-parked vehicles highlight the new scheme designed to ease traffic around the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Parañaque. NAIA assistant general manager for security Angel Atutubo said the "traffic enhancement and management" plan is patterned after those for airports in Clark and Subic. "We have deployed airport police and MMDA personnel around the airport. We'll give priority to departing passengers," Atutubo said in Filipino during an interview on dzRH radio. He said airport police and MMDA enforcers have been placed in "strategic corners" around the airport premises since June 12. Traffic personnel also have instructions to tow away vehicles that are double-parked outside the designated parking areas at the airport, he said. Atutubo advised motorists to pay the P35 parking fee instead of having to cough up P1,500 to recover towed-away vehicles. He added that lanes prioritizing departing passengers will be set up around the airport facility. Vehicles bearing departing passengers will be allowed to use the flyover leading to NAIA, while well-wishers greeting arriving passengers will have to use the lower-level road. "Our study shows well-wishers of arriving passengers arrive one to two hours ahead of schedule so they can afford to wait. This is unlike departing passengers who have to check in their baggage," he said. Atutubo said authorities are also planning a multi-level parking system near NAIA Terminal 1 and the Old Domestic Road. He said the multi-level parking system will accommodate well-wishers and greeters. He also said signs for the "Airport Discipline Zone" will be installed before the end of July. He said the MMDA is manufacturing the signs. Meanwhile, Atutubo's office has recommended that Pasay City traffic aides be diverted near Andres Avenue to direct traffic of tricycles, pedicabs and passenger jeeps. The MMDA is planning to put jeep and bus terminals in that area, he said. - GMANews.TV
