Over 50 classrooms in Muntinlupa rendered useless due to fault
More than 50 classrooms in three Muntinlupa schools have been rendered useless after they were found to be transected by one of the faults in Metro Manila.
Dr. Mauro De Gulan, the DepEd Schools Division Superintendent in Muntinlupa, added that certain school buildings face demolition if the DepEd and the City Engineering Office would find it necessary.
Of the said classrooms, 22 are from Pedro E. Diaz National High School, 22 are from Buli Elementary School, and eight are found in Alabang Elementary School. DepEd announced last week that classes in Buli Elementary School will open on June 8 to give way to adjustments like dividing a number of classrooms into two to accommodate some 2,000 enrollees.
Muntinlupa Rep. Rodolfo Biazon during the forum asked officials about the “vulnerability” of school buildings if a 7.2 magnitude earthquake were to hit Metro Manila. De Gulan said DepEd was also coordinating with private schools on the matter.
In an earlier interview, Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro said that upon validation that certain school buildings were in fact transected by a fault, DepEd would need the “legal basis” first to have the structures demolished. -NB, GMA News
