Phivolcs sets quake drill Monday
In observance of National Disaster Consciousness Month, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has scheduled an earthquake drill on Monday afternoon. Phivolcs said the drill, scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, is the second annual quake drill and will also mark the 17th anniversary of the July 16, 1990 killer quake in Baguio City. âAside from the usual earthquake drill comprised of the Alarm, Response, Evacuation, Assembly, Headcount and Evaluation phases, Phivolcsâ five divisions will implement a continuity plan," it said in an advisory on its website (phivolcs.dost.gov.ph). One highlight of Mondayâs drill is the seismic monitoring by the Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division (Soepd) at the evacuation area. âWith the aid of its mirror seismic station in Tagaytay City, the Central Office will continue its operation for the plotting of the location of the earthquake through the use of generator for power supply, and wireless and satellite phones for communication," it said. Other divisions will likewise evacuate and bring with them the necessary things that will still enable them to continue their fundamental duties even after a damaging earthquake. Phivolcs employees will also practice the use of fire extinguishers available in the office during the firefighting exercises. âWith the continuing advocacy for disaster awareness, preparedness and mitigation, Phivolcs encourages everyone to initiate similar activities in their homes, schools and offices," Phivolcs said. - GMANews.TV
