Hitting Aquino admin anew, VP Binay asks: ‘Nasaan ang gobyerno?’

(Updated 5:19 p.m.) A feisty Vice President Jejomar Binay on Wednesday faced his supporters as he assumed chairmanship of the opposition party United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), once again publicly criticizing the Aquino administration for its supposed inefficiency in addressing social problems.

"Ang tanong ng bayan, nasaan? Nasaan ang gobyerno?" Binay said in a scathing speech during the launch of UNA as a political party, where he enumerated the areas where the Aquino administration allegedly failed to do its job.

Binay, who only resigned last week after serving for five years in the Aquino Cabinet, went on, "Laganap pa rin ang kahirapan, kaya ang tanong ng bayan, nasaan ang gobyerno?"

Binay would repeat this catchphrase a couple more times, and mention several other issues that had put the current administration in bad light, like the deaths of 44 Special Action Force officers in the January 25 Mamasapano clash and complaints against the services of the MRT.

The Vice President was President Benigno Aquino III's housing czar and adviser on overseas Filipino workers' affairs and

Binay replaced former President and incumbent Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada as UNA chairman. Estrada did not attend the event held at the Makati City Coliseum.

In a statement after Binay delivered another speech critical of the administration, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said Aquino’s government “stands on its record of having restored the pride and dignity of the Filipino nation.”

“On the platform of good governance, we have expanded the coverage of social protection, and laid the foundations for inclusive growth,” Coloma said Wednesday evening.

UNA

Binay said UNA is formed to correct all the wrongs of the Aquino administration.

He also vowed to lead a better government and improve Filipinos' lives with the help of UNA.

Hirap na tayo sa kaunlarang iilan lang ang nakikinabang,” he said.

As an alternative to Aquino's supposed failed leadership, Binay presented UNA's platform, which he said is anchored on three programs: social inclusion and improvement of basic services, economic dynamism, and effective and caring governance.

He said UNA seeks to provide free basic education and subsidized higher education as well as improved medical services for the Filipino people.

—KBK, GMA News
