CBCP: Pope appoints Cardinal Tagle to Pontifical Council
Pope Francis has appointed Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as a member of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum," which manages the Catholic Church’s international charitable activities.
The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said this was more than a month after Tagle was elected president of Caritas Internationalis, the Church's social action arm.
Cor Unum, instituted by Pope Paul VI in 1971, serves humanitarian initiatives in cases of disaster, in the name of the Pope.
Cor Unum was among the early responders to super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) devastated the Visayas and left more than 6,300 dead.
It also funded the construction of the Pope Francis Center in Palo, Leyte.
Last May, Tagle became president of Caritas, the first Asian to head the global charities agency. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
