CBCP: More than 1,500 PHL missionaries sent abroad in last 12 months
More than 1,500 religious men and women being deployed abroad from August 2014 to July 2015, making the Philippines a "formation hub" for missionaries, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said.
This was the gist of the CBCP's Episcopal Commission on Mutual Relations’ report during the CBCP's Plenary Assembly in Manila last weekend.
ECMR executive secretary Sr. Joy Carmel Jumawan said 449 religious men and 1,115 religious women were deployed for missionary work abroad from August 2014 to July 2015 (http://www.cbcpnews.com/ cbcpnews/?p=59964).
"Most Filipino priests come from the Society of the Divine Word while nuns come from the Reparatrix Sisters of the Sacred Heart," the CBCP said.
Also between August 2014 and July 2015, she said 343 religious men and 651 religious women arrived in the Philippines from Vietnam, China, Indonesia, and South Korea and are now studying in various colleges and universities.
Combined, the foreign and Filipino missionaries come from up to 193 religious congregations.
