Baby-slapping mom aware of her actions but could not stop, examining psychologist says

The mother who was seen in a viral video repeatedly slapping her newborn baby last week knew what she was doing, but could not stop herself, said the psychologist who interviewed her in a report from GMA News' late afternoon newscast, “QRT” on Tuesday.

Psychologist Mylah Rosalejos said the 25-year-old mother became irritated that her baby started crying after she lost her mobile phone. Annoyed by the crying, she hurt her child.

The mother was recommended for additional therapy as she is suspected to have bipolar disorder on top of the postpartum syndrome she has.

At the neonatal intensive care unit of the Pasay City General Hospital the baby has been confined and could be discharged soon.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said they won't allow the baby to be released to the mother until she gets adequate mental treatment.

The DSWD is searching for relatives of the mother to whom they can entrust the baby for proper care.  — ELR, GMA News
