ADJUSTMENT FOR K-12
DLSU mulls automatic admission of students from La Salle schools
De La Salle University (DLSU) is mulling automatic admission of senior high school students from La Salle schools to adjust to the impact of the implementation of the K-12 program.
During a University Town Hall Meeting on September 11, DLSU Vice Chancellor for Academics Dr. Robert Roleda said that they are coordinating with La Salle Greenhills, De La Salle Zobel, and De La Salle University Integrated School to become University's Senior High School (SHS). When the students finish SHS, they can be automatically admitted to DLSU.
"If we do this of course there is a quality aspect we have to look at. Can we simply take these SHS students to DLSU without diminishing the quality of our intake? We can do that by getting engaged in these high schools ourselves," the unversity's official publication The Lasallian quoted Roleda.
The automatic admission is one of DLSU's connectivity projects aimed at seamless integration of the SHS and college curricula.
To do so, DLSU plans to asssist the high schools in their course design and by offering training and seminars for their teachers. DLSU professors who have minimal teaching loads can also decide to teach in these high schools.
"By doing that, we also ensure that the quality of [SHS] teaching in that school is of the right level. We should also get involved in the assessment of those schools," Roleda added.
Other plans discussed during the town hall include scholarships for professors, development grants, as well as offering Senior High School (SHS) in DLSU.
Because of the implementation of the K-12 program that added two years to the 10-year basic education, DLSU is expecting to experience a drop in freshmen admissions for AY 2016-2017 and AY 2017-2018.
Roleda noted that the University of the Philippines only received 6,000 applicants this year, instead of the usual 80,000. —Trisha Macas/JST, GMA News
