Reyes brothers back in PHL after deportation from Thailand

Former Palawan Gov. Joel Reyes and former Coron Mayor Mario Reyes, both wanted for the murder of environmentalist Gerry Ortega, have arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport early Friday morning after their deportation from Thailand.

The Reyes brothers were brought to the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame where they and the PNP will wait orders from the court on where the accused will be detained.

Ortega was shot dead in January 2011, in a slaying that bore the hallmarks of a contract killing.

He had been campaigning against mining interests on the island of Palawan in the western Philippines.

Police caught the gunman fleeing the scene, and traced the pistol used in the murder to a lawyer of Joel Reyes.

The governor, along with his brother fled to Thailand in February, 2012, and subsequently had their passports revoked.

The two were arrested in an apartment in southern Phuket island over the weekend.  — with Reuters/ELR, GMA News
