Palace: Big number of COCs for top posts means PHL democracy is vibrant

Malacañang on Saturday said that the extraordinary number of those who filed certificates of candidacy for the top positions of the land is a showcase that our brand of democracy is vibrant.

In an interview on state-run dzRB radio, presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said, "Makikita ho natin siguro talaga … I guess ... how vibrant your democracy is, because you can see everyone who is wanting to serve, and everyone has their own contribution to what they feel should be part of public service."

"But, nonetheless, makikita po natin ‘yan when Comelec releases the final list of candidates ... Kasi, siyempre, sasalain pa rin po ‘yan...," she added.

She noted that the poll body will still determine if a candidate is capable to "run" based on some criteria.

"Yung kakayahan na mag-mount ng national campaign, et cetera, so siguro po hintayin na lang natin. But you can see that the political landscape remains very colorful," she said.

As of 7 p.m. last Friday, the partial count of those who filed their candidacy for president was at 130. Meanwhile, there were 19 for vice president and 172 for senator.
