Spoiled food packs dumped in Leyte supposed to be for Ruby and Glenda survivors —DSWD
The food packs and sacks of rice dumped in Dagami, Leyte were relief goods supposed to have been handed out to survivors of typhoons Ruby and Glenda which devastated the country last year, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said on Thursday.
"Ito po ay para sa Ruby at Glenda na mga survivors. Hindi po ito donasyon. Ito po ay 'yung aming regular na relief packs na prinocure ng aming tanggapan at 'yan po ay nandoon sa aming mga warehouses," DSWD Secretary Corazon "Dinky" J. Soliman said in a report by Balitanghali.
The investigation follows reports by a concerned citizen that sacks of rice were buried in an area along the reservoir in Dagami, 10-feet wide and 15-feet deep.
According to Soliman, the goods which were buried in the area are no longer fit for human consumption.
The DSWD is now looking into the details as to why the goods were not given out, which caused spoilage.
"Bakit dumating sa yugto na hindi na angkop kainin? Bakit 'di naipamigay agad?" Soliman asked.
Soliman also noted that her office has already sent someone to Leyte to investigate further.
The National Food Authority (NFA) earlier cleared that the packages were not from their office.
"Tinitiyak ko po, tinitiyak ng NFA na hindi NFA ang nagtapon diyan," NFA spokesperson Jerry Imperial said in a report in GMA News To Go.
According to Imperial, the proper disposal procedure of the NFA calls for the laboratory testing of goods to check if these are not fit for human consumption.
There must also be inspection and an inventory report from the Commission on Audit (COA). —Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/KG, GMA News
