Robredo, Sara Duterte meet over lunch in Davao City

Although they are supporting different presidential candidates for the May 2016 elections, Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo and former Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte took time off from their busy schedules to catch up on each other’s lives over lunch Tuesday.

Photos released by Robredo’s media bureau showed her and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter, who's also known as Inday Sara, talking inside what looked like a humble eatery in Davao City.

Robredo said the conversation with Duterte took place when she was in the city to meet with civil society organizations, and members of marginalized sectors such as farmers and indigenous peoples.

“Pinuntahan tayo ni Mayor Sara para sa isang maikling kumustahan dahil magkaibigan kami,” she said.

The lawmaker, who is running for vice president under the Liberal Party, said she and Duterte did not talk about politics during their chat.

“Walang pulitika at personal na buhay lamang ang napag-usapan at napagkuwentuhan,” she said.

Even though there are only five months left before next year’s elections, Robredo appealed to the public to set aside politics this holiday season.

“Itabi muna natin ang pulitika ngayong panahon ng Pasko at bigyang panahon ang pagkakaisa at pagmamahalan,” she said.

The elder Duterte had expressed his dislike for Robredo weeks ago after the lawmaker said in a roundtable discussion with newspaper editors and reporters that she was not in favor of an iron-clad rule.

The mayor, who is running on an anti-crime platform, responded by saying he has an aversion to Robredo’s leadership style.

“I do not also subscribe the style of her leadership. Tabla lang kami — she does not like me, I do not like her, so no problem,” he said in Davao City.

Last week, Robredo said she would like the mayor to receive some coaching on how to treat women and manage his temper should she become the vice president under a Duterte administration.
